Title : Consensus concubinarius: un'invenzione giuridica per il principe [Ecclesiastical concepts of marriage as consensual and a sacrament coexisted in practice during the Middle Ages with a less formal union, concubinage. Servants frequently served as concubines of their employers. Lawyers had to deal with the nebulous status of the concubine and with that of her children too. In later centuries, a greater emphasis on matrimony led to the identification of concubinage with prostitution. Title note supplied by Feminae.].

Title : The Preacher as Women's Mentor [Although a preacher like the Dominican Observant Giovanni Dominici guided women's lives, his audience also influenced him. Dominici's sermons praised the patriarchal family and procreation, while decrying all extramarital sex. He also criticized girls who became nuns for the wrong reasons, including the lack of a suitable husband. Dominici shared the misogyny of his age, but he showed an intimate awareness of women's situations and concerns. Title note supplied by Feminae.]

Title : L'idea della donna nella cultura della prima metà del Quattrocento toscano [for the Middle Ages we have vastly more material written by men than by women, and the evidence is skewed in favor of the upper classes; much of early and high medieval writing on women was influenced by the misogyny of Jerome and favored celibacy; late medieval theologians came to speak more highly of marriage and the family, but they still favored discipline as the ideal for women; the humanists placed even greater emphasis on marriage; Italian merchants placed a great emphasis on procreation, but their memoirs can speak of wives in loving terms].
